Sunday 30/09/07. Jerome, priest AD420. Trinity 17.
The readings in church today centred around death, dying, and resurrection. The Rector seemed to emphasise the former whilst Colin, our Curate, preaching also from the same Lectionary, emphasised the latter at Cambuslang where he was Celebrating and preaching. Like the reading today from the scripture lesson of the rich man and the poor man - it depends which end you come from! Our new lady arrived back in church today, although her fiance has yet to venture in. Folk chatted her up, which was nice. Valerie and I were Sidesfolk today so were busy dealing with the congregation etc. We had a second count of the hefty Collection as we mis-counted; an unusual event for us, but we got it correct and I took it to the Night Safe down the road. Valerie, Dorothy and Grace were in the Church Hall rehearsing a biblical passage they were parodying for a Review by the Diocesan Council tonight at St Ninian's, Pollokshields. The Dean, who is also Rector of St Ninian's has a Russian Choir singing for us at Evensong and the local presbyterian, Church of Scotland Church are also presenting something, all in aid of a charity the C of S support in Glasgow. I also put up most of the Fire Notices together with location maps, in various venues at church, suitably laminated by Laurence. All this is to do with the new regulations emanating from the Office of the Scottish Charities Register, and Ecclesiastical Insurance. The regulating of Scottish charities is quite new as in the past there were no guidelines or checks. England always had the Charities Commissioner. This then, is all new to us, but no bad thing, although it entails much new work relating to Health & Safety.
Well, I did cut the remaining 2 lawns and then trimmed some hedges and gave up. I was pleased I did get a lot done in the garden, including sweeping leaves up. That was tiresome yet relaxing. This afternoon I punched in the postcode to my relatively new SatNav, of my friend the Treasuer, Laurence Maclaren, who lives in nearby Newton Mearns. I had never been to his house before but I let my SatNav direct me verbally. It was quite accurate, although nit directed me to number 19, instead of number 30 which I had requested. Obviously No 19 has a Sat Nav!

Sunday, 23 Sep 2007 (Trinity 16 - St Adamnan of Iona, Ab 704 AD ).
Last evening Valerie and I took Grace and her husband David to the Uplawmoor Hotel, the other side of Barrhead and Neilston, for dinner to celebrate their Golden Wedding, and they were presented with a minature bottle of champaigne, which was nice. As usual there, an excellent dinner and excellent attention and deserted roads all the way home. This afternoon, busy around the house and managed to cut 3 lawns which were drying out after all the rain. 2 more to do, but not today. Time for a wee dram and to watch the golf from The Belfry.

Friday 21 September 2007 (St Matthew, Ap ).
Busy, busy; too busy. Photocopying, preparing documents for an extra-ordinary Vestry meeting at church next Sunday after the morning Family Eucharist, to peruse our Insurers' Survey reports which request some immediate action. Then, Valerie and I had a nice soujourn by going for a late lunch yesterday at Sibbo Delhi Dhaba Indian Restaurant on Sauchiehall Street; a favourite haunt of ours where the food is prepared freshly and delicately by the family who run it. It is perhaps the best Indian restaurant I know in the City. The evening ended with a lovely concert in the City Halls by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra which included a new piece by the Finnish composer Saariaho, although for me the combination of conductor Ilan Volkov and Holst's The Planets ended a lovely day.
Oh, and including viewing the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 returning to her home port on her 40th birthday to the day. She was built at the John Brown Yard on the Clyde and 40 shipbuilders who worked on her construction were invited aboard. The RAF Red Arrows flew past and a pipe band played. The American passengers probably would have no understanding at all of the great affection Clydesiders have for their ships. Sadly she will end up as an hotel at Dubai in the Gulf States. What a sad end for a great Queen.

Sunday 16 September 2007 ( Trinity 15 / Feast of St Ninian of Whithorn.
Our Rector was Celebrating at St Oswald's Church today and so we had as our Celebrant, Isabella - the Revd Isabella Dowlen, p-in-c @ St Oswald's, King's Park, Glasgow. She was warmly welcomed back as she started off at our church of St Aidan's, and she is a good preacher. She does not have a singing voice, like Colin, our Curate, but nonetheless we all sang the Eucharistic responses anyway. A visitor to church today could not be engaged and so was not engaged in too much chat afterwards. Perhaps she was just 'sussing' us out. I am trying to design a Fire Exits and Assembly Point set of sheets for the church and hall and, as we have a new building extension I had to go there today and re-design the form as I am still unfamiliar with the new building layout.
As we face the resignation of our Rector Paul, in mid-November, I am planning to sketch out a new Parish Profile to put to the new Vacancy Committee of the Vestry, and to the Dean, the Very Revd Dr Gregor Duncan, as well as our Diocesan Bishop, who is also Primus inter Pares
of the Scottish Episcopal Church. This is not as easy as it may sound; however, there are others to help. People to see - Reg Williams with his Minutes of the Building Project Site Meeting, Laurence Maclaren, our Treasurer, with concerns about Insurance reports and the Electrical Surveyor's report, Shirley McGreevy regarding Aidancraft's offer to re-design and re-plant the Remembrance Garden, Lydia Tate who had given flower money in remembrance of her late husband Roy and their wedding anniversary so time was given to listen to Lydia.
I reminded Lydia that her namesake was the backbone of her church in Biblical times so we laughed.
